Jennie! This was so great! I have a fear of heights and various other things, and I hate it when people try to tell me that I'm "missing out" or that I can somehow conquer these fears (like diving! no, thank you! I just don't want to!). I was about to sign up for the memoir course and I paused because your essay was so good, so important. I had to sit and think about what exactly made me wait until February 29 (actually I was on the fence back in November!) and to have enough self-respect to ask myself the right questions about my fears. Thank you for this! I had some very important realizations, and then...I signed up! And I feel so much better now!
This is the loveliest note. And you are not alone... it takes people a long time to make big decisions, so I get it. I'm glad this post helped! And also YAY -- I can't wait to share our program with you.
First, great title! Second...the line "I’m afraid every day, but it’s the kind of fear that is energizing and makes me feel alive." really resonates with me. I feel it snapping at my heels. Thanks for the honesty. Commaraderie is good.
Great post! It took alot of bravery to put that out there the day before the discount for the Memoir class expires, but transparency is one of the reasons people appreciate you so much. Thanks for looking out for writers, coaches and those of us dipping our toe in the waters.
I appreciate that these are the vibes you get from me. That means a lot. And TBH that wasn't intentional, so we can't call it brave! I think I spend more time talking people OUT of doing my program than talking them INTO it. The right clients make or break your business -- true for a brand new book coach or for someone in their 11th year of business like me....
As a tired breadwinner who’s about to give her two weeks notice to an unfulfilling 38-year career in technical writing, move to Portland and either enroll in a graduate-level Book Publishing program or pursue certification through your excellent program, can I just say - I feel seen. 🥰
And oh WOW -- two week's notice. That's awesome! Congratulations! And is that Portland Maine or Portland Oregon??
And I would be happy to meet with you 1:1 to help you decide for or against my program or answer any questions you have. You can write me at contact@authoraccelerator.com
My sister moved to Portland OR a few years ago after a lifetime on the East Coast — and for similar reasons. She walked out of a tenure track job because she was just DONE. It’s a great city!
I messaged you the link to sign up with me — they just made direct messaging available here on Substack and you were my first one! I hope it works
Great post with an important message. Reminds me of parasailing on my honeymoon almost 20 years ago! I don't like heights either and I felt every bit of your zip lining anxiety while reading this. It's a good reminder that what others might interpret as a fear-based decision is just straight up honesty. Not every adventure is for everyone.
Great piece Jennie. And while i love zip lining and rope courses and all that jazz, I too will not watch dark movies or horror movies. Ever since my kid was born almost 30 years ago. And I was a film student.🫢

We're all in it together!

Got it and have made an appointment. Thanks again!
Portland, Oregon and thanks! I’d really appreciate the guidance.

Ha! I went scuba diving on my honeymoon and haven't done it since!

Does your kid like them? Mine don't seem to share my terror!
My kid will watch anything 😬
