Love this writer's energy assessment and am eager to read Diana's book on the topic when it comes out. I've been writing a narrative nf book for a while (it has been waylaid by studies I've opted to take) - and just this week, after all the planning and writing of proposal and choosing whom to pitch to and how with my coach - I HAD IDEA ENERGY for a whole new chapter 2! Perhaps I should call that assessment/revision - both of which are elements I love, cutting it into pieces and making it leaner. Except, on this occasion, it's more rather than less.
Jennie, this is utterly brilliant. Nicely encapsulates all the moments in a project’s life. I will share this post with coaching clients and my graduate students writing dissertations too. Thank you! (And congrats to Diana!)
Love this! As a writer and a coach, I’ve definitely seen and felt these different kinds of energy. Side note: is it time to stop thinking of “writing” as one singular activity? I think so!
I’m wondering, do you find that different writers have more of one kind of energy than another? And in addition to the suggestions you make in the post about how to support them in the various phases, might there be a way to harness an energy they have more of and use it in service of a different part of the process? Definitely something I’ll be noodling on!
Wondering if you just outlined your next book....:)
🤣 or maybe it's just a blog post??? That's the question!
We can so relate to this—especially the difference between activation energy and perseverance energy!
It's big, right?
