I just concluded the beta run of The Art of Pricing — a masterclass I created to help book coaches design their business ecosystem and learn a framework for setting prices. I had 23 book coaches take the course and will be writing more posts about what I learned from teaching the training, but today, I want to share one of my favorite moments from the week.
One of the coaches, whom I shall refer to as C., was really struggling with the whole concept of raising her prices. She was telling herself a story about why she couldn’t or shouldn’t. She was ignoring the data, which showed that higher prices were warranted.
“Do you have evidence you are awesome?” I asked.
C. smiled and then said with quiet confidence, “Yes, I do.”
C. proceeded to explain how happy her writers are, how much progress they are making, how much good she is doing to help these writers write better books, and how much joy she feels being a book coach and growing her business.
She refuted her own doubt just by looking around at the evidence of her own awesomeness.
How did I feel so confident in asking a student this question?
Because most of us have this kind of evidence staring us in the face every day.
Most of us start book coaching businesses because we have an affinity for it, a deep level of talent for it, and a commitment to excellence.
But we tend to focus on things that aren’t going well, or that feel hard, or that we wish were already happening in our business rather than on what we are already doing that is awesome.
So perhaps today ask yourself, “Do I have evidence I am awesome?”
P.S.
I am speaking here to myself, too, so this morning while I write this and think about how the new masterclass unfolded, I am trying to focus on all the good that happened and the joy in gathering together a group of committed book coaches who wanted to learn and grow rather than on the ways in which I totally misjudged how long things would take.
A roomful of doubt monsters, huh? What a novelty. Yesterday, I raised all the prices on my website not just because I'm awesome but because I get results, and isn't that what people pay for?
That was an awesome moment. Since then, I have asked myself that question when I’m sitting in self-doubt. Thank you so much, Jennie.
